The rules

As the game plays them, word for word from the rule book that is a click away in the game's menu and in the middle of any match.

The rack and the pockets

  • All fifteen balls are racked in a triangle in no particular order. The breaker places the cue ball anywhere behind the head string. The break is an ordinary shot.
  • The pockets are given out, not chosen: your pocket is ringed on the table and named in the scoreboard.

Scoring

  • A ball in your own pocket on a legal shot scores one point for you, and you play again.
  • A ball in your opponent's pocket scores one point for your opponent, whoever played the shot, and does not keep you at the table.
  • A ball in any of the other four pockets goes back on the foot spot and scores nothing.
  • The first player to 8 points wins. You can win on your opponent's shot.

A legal shot

  • The cue ball must hit a ball, any ball, and then a ball must be potted or some ball must reach a cushion. Shots are not called.

Fouls

  • Potting the cue ball or sending it off the table; hitting nothing; no ball potted and no ball to a cushion after the hit; driving a ball off the table.
  • A foul costs one point, and one of the balls you have scored goes back on the table. With no points to give, your score goes below zero. Balls you pot in your own pocket on a foul are put back and do not score.
  • After the cue ball is potted or leaves the table, the other player has it in hand behind the head string. After any other foul it is played from where it lies.

Stalemate

  • After six turns in a row with no ball scored the players are warned. Three more turns each and the game starts again from a fresh rack, at nil all.
